Central Vacuum Cleaner Questions asked

Resolved Question: Why does my central a/c work now that it is not really hot out?

I had a problem with my central a/c. The first really hot day we had it just did not want to work. The inside fan and outside fan would keep running but he lines coming out would not be cool very long at all and the a/coil inside would only work for a short while. The outside unit when first turned on would hiss for a few minutes straight and then stop for a minute and then do shorter hisses (maybe a minute) and continute that pattern until compressor just quit working. Then when I turned the A/C off and tried to turn back on (had friend do it from inside), nothing would come on. The outiside fan would move about 6 inches and I heard a click and nothing worked. If I pushed in this little reset thing on my thermostat with a pen and immediately tried to turn it on again, it came on but I do not believe the compressor was working as none of lines got cool or nothing unless I let it sit a while and then it would do the same thing I spoke of at the beginning. Well, we left it off. Today, it was like 77 outside, still humid and mobil homes STAY hot even though we hooked up a small window unit. Well, now the A/c is working as if there is nothing wrong with it at all!!!!!! The air coming out actually seems colder than before maybe because of the cleaning we did to the coils and stuff. But never took the cover off of the A-Coil and cleaned out the "middle" of it. Just cleaned the outside of it. And have not messed with it for 5 years since installed. Could this be causing any of my problems? I just looked at the inside and it does not LOOK dirty, but I cleaned it by using toothbrush for harder spots to get to and then a big brush for the rest and used a squirt bottle to squirt the water through. But when I shut down the A/c to do this, I noticed something I also noticed the other day, the copper looking hoops on the right side of the "triangle" were ALL wet and cool. The row on the left were dry and not cool at the top but the few bottom ones WERE wet and cool. What is this about? AT the top of the A-Coil there is 3 lines going in that all join to the big cold line going to outside, don't know if that helps or not but figured I would throw it in there. BTW, when we moved our trailer our lines were open exposed from October until March, just bent over (after sitting for first week wide open!) We hired a man who is licensed but doing a side job and he said it did not need driers as he was vacuuming the system and puting nitogen through it also. I was told since the lines on the unit were cut (don't ask me about it?!) that a peice of metal or anything could have made it's way into the compressor and made it bad. But if it is bad then why is it working so good as I am typing this right now?? It is not THAT hot outside as it is after midnight. Sorry so long, but I figure the more you know the better you can help. I really do appreciate any help or ideas that anyone has, I don't have money to buy a compressor! Oh, btw, this is R-22 and it is an older system, but never had problems until this year after moving the trailer and some idiot cutting the lines without telling me until it was done. A-coil although is only 5 years old as I had to have a new one put in when I bought the mobile home. Outside unit is alot older. more

Resolved Question: Help please, Central Air not working properly?

Hello, I am hoping someone here can help me. I was looking online for a HVAC forum that might be able to help me with my issue and I found this! I had a new furnace and Central Air installed about 3-4 years ago now. In the last couple days, it hasn't been cooling as well as it used to. I've been noticing that it just keeps running and running. Last night for example, I had set it to 74 just to try and get it to run less. The temperature outside was about 65 or so by that time. It's been really hot and humid the last few days. But even with that, such a new unit shouldn't have to keep running and running, should it? One thing I did to today was replace the air filter. It's been just over 6 months since I've replaced it. But that doesn't seem to have helped. I also noticed that the A/C unit outside was covered with junk between the slats. I've never honestly thought about cleaning those out. So, I took a vacuum and an air hose and cleaned out in between the slats and even inside as best as I could. It's much better than it was. I can actually see the metal inside when I look between the slats now! However, it still doesn't seem to be running as cool as it should be. Granted, today is another muggy, hot day. But I can't seem to get the inside temperature to go below 75-74 now. Currently the outside temperature is 77 and semi sunny. One thing I have noticed is that when I look at the physical A/C pieces down in the basement (sorry, I have no idea of the proper terminology); there are two pieces that are joined by a flexible fabric. It's the piece that sits on top of the furnace. If I remember right the first (bottom) part holds some triangular shape thing that does the actual cooling. Well, the bottom piece is extremely cold to the touch. But the piece above it is not so cold. It is cold, but nowhere near the coldness of the bottom piece. There is also a lot of liquid (condensation) accumulating on the one side of the bottom piece. I've linked photos for you to see to maybe help with what I'm talking about here. My Central Air unit is made by Trane if that helps any. The company that installed it is closed now. It's Saturday and they close at 3. I really don't want to call it an emergency and have to pay a ton of money if there is something I can do myself or wait until early next week for them to come out and look at it if it is something major. I hope I explained my issue well and thanks in advance for any help! Picture of both the top and bottom ducting that sits above the furnace: http://www.myworthlesscrap.com/Shared/Pics/HVAC/Both.jpg Picture of the side of the bottom piece with all the liquid: http://www.myworthlesscrap.com/Shared/Pics/HVAC/Bottom.jpgOkay, well I have some new info. Looking at the pictures I posted, I realized that there is a access hatch from the top section. I never noticed that before because it's a bit dark on that side. Anyway, I took the hatch off and saw that on the bottom half of the triangular evaporator coil (at least I think that's what it is now by looking online) has a bunch of ice built up on it on both sides. It's just the bottom half of the evaporator. I'm guess this is not good. Should I break out a hair dryer and thaw it out and see if that helps? Or just wait until it melts naturally? Or am I just screwed and really do need to call a HVAC tech to come out?It looks like it may just the because the evaporator was iced over from a combination of the air filter needing to be changed and the unit outside being blocked off from a good air supply. I'm running the fan only to help it melt and we'll see what happens after that.I called the original installers and it has a 5 year parts warranty. They will be out tomorrow to look at it, but the labor isn't covered under the warranty.Well, the HVAC guy was just here and the problem was that it was low on refrigerant. Also, as the the guy was buttoning up the unit, as he was leaning on it, we started to hear a leaking sound. He brought out some leak detect solution and we were able to find the leak at a bend in the copper tube from the bottom of the compressor. He will get a price for me tomorrow and let me know the cost of repairing it. I guess even thought it's a factory part and factory bend, it's not covered under the 5 year warranty. Thought I'd update everyone and I appreciate all the help! more

Resolved Question: They often use thin-walled PVC pipes for things like central vacuum-cleaning and other stuff, which _________|?

they say, especially for central vacuum-cleaning, is "so that there's more room for material to move through." Okay, my questions about that are: 1. Why is it supposedly "so important" to use those (more expensive?--but correct me if I'm wrong, please) thin-walled pipes instead of just using slightly over-all bigger, standard-thickness-walled pipes (not a lot bigger, just enough bigger that their insides are as wide as these thin-walled pipes would be), and... 2. Why bother with that little bit bigger size of space inside, since the amount of space gained is just marginal anyway (what, about 1/8" in total diameter, about 1/16" of wall thickness, right?), and... 3. am I correct that thin-walled pipes are more expensivve, and if so, why would they be, if, for a given diameter, they actually have LESS material than their thicker-walled counterparts? Will you please come back a bit later to see if I have added any CLARIFICATIONS or other necessary follow-up (NOT CHAT) here if your answers need some follow-up in return? Will you please come back after the question closes to see if I've sent any CHAT comments (OKAY in comments box after closing) for your answers? Thanks, if so. (P.S.I'm not trying to ask 3 questions for the point-price of 1; I'm just asking these 3 in the same main unit because they're so relatedly intertwined, so they just about have to be asked together.)Follow-up (NOT CHAT) for Smokey: Okay, thanks. So is that the main reason they'd use pipe with a thinner wall to get more flow space than just using an over-all wider pipe--just if it costs less that way than to just buy bigger pipe? Or are there other reasons, and what, if so? more

Voting Question: I'm a new nanny - how much should I charge?

I would be working about 30 hours per week during the day. There are two children. One child is 21/2 years old and the other is a newborn - 4 weeks old. The family is upper middle class and we live in central Ohio. I would not be living with the family. I would be cleaning up after the children and cooking for them, as well as engaging in housework - vacuuming, laundry, and dishes. I will also be driving them to summer camps, grandparents, parks, zoo, etc. I have a Bachelor's degree with concentration in childhood development and 10+ years of babysitting experience. How much should I charge per week? I do not want to charge too low or too high. more

Voting Question: Are Central Vacuums worth the price to add to a new home?

We are moving into a 4200sq ft home and have the option of spending $3400 for a central vac system. (Dirt Devil cv2600) We have a dog and have heard that it doesnt do as well picking up dog hair. My wife is a stickler for things being clean. Is it worth the price to have this installed for the convenience, or should we spend a lot less and get a great conventional vacuum and use the money toward other upgrades? more

Voting Question: Name this comedian for me please?

I saw this comedian on a cruise and they said he'd been on comedy central. He had jokes about: -how women have unfair expectations about gifts (something like, "If I get her a vacuum cleaner that does not fly. Well, it except at me") - he said the best age was 5 because theyre the only ones who can boss everyone else around by going, "you! tie my shoe! and make it a double knot so this does not happen again") Said they even get encouraged when they poop and that what they dont know is that years later their girlfriends will see their poop and be disgusted. - he said that people who invented toilet seat covers were crazy for making it like a puzzle to rip out and mentions some people crazy enough to "blast" through it -said men naturally dont notice things women do and gave example saying a woman gets green contacts and is furious when the husband doesnt notice "my eyes were green for 2 weeks and you didnt notice!" "really? you should get that checked, it sounds serious." Anyway, what reallyt sucks is that i could remember a lot of his jokes but i couldnt remember the comedians name DD: Anyone recognize him? I think I saw his act a couple of years ago >.>he had black or dark brown hair and looked in his 30s or 40s? :/ He had no accent, caucasian i think more

Resolved Question: Is it better to have a central vacuum cleaner or a portable one? Which is more cost effective?

Our central vaccuum cleaner that came with the house we live in needs to be completely replaced. Our portable one (Electrolux) just died after owning it for 30 years. more

Resolved Question: Central Vacuum- how does it clean if it's not combing the carpet?

We're renting a home with central vacuum. The head for the hose is just a flat head, nothing rotates and there's no wheels. It's a bit of effort to push it around the carpet, and how does it work well if it's not combing the carpet? This system is much too expensive to work less well than a typical vacuum cleaner. more

Resolved Question: What do I do?? My dad is a total idiot!!!?

My parents usually fight over 3 things: How my dad doesn't do anything in the house, how my dad doesn't really know about me and my sisters' lives, and money (i'm not familiar with this one). So the central problem here is my dad. Too be honest, I agree with my mom: he's a lazy, ignorant person who doesn't care enough about his family to help. He doesn't know anything about me or my sisters. All he does is check our math/physics/science homework (because he's an engineer). He doesn't know about any of our friends, except the one or two that have been around a lot. He NEVER helps around the house. It's mostly because he doesn't know how, but he doesn't care enough to learn. All he does everyday is play Spider Solitaire or Web Sudoku on the computer, read the news, and sleep. My mom cooks, cleans, does the laundry, takes care of our activities, and buys us presents. My dad does NOTHING. Well, occasionally he cleans our bathrooms, vacuums the floor, and shovels snow, if forced. The other bad thing is my dad THINKS he can fix everything, but really, he can't, so whenever he tries to fix stuff, it ends up broken and he can't bring himself to admit he's not capable of fixing it and call a pro to fix it. And my dad has a problem with thinking that he's always right. Whenever we (mom, me, sisters) tell him he doesn't know what he's doing or he's wrong, he always says "You are all wrong!!! You don't know what your doing!". For example, when my sisters USB drive on her comp broke, he said "I can fix it!", so he started attempting to fix it, but he couldn't so he made up the excuse "It's the things you're trying to plug in that are messed up" but we tried both my iPod and my sisters flash drive and they both didn't work. My dad could not just admit the computer was broken and he couldn't fix it. Should I change my dad?? How?? HELP!!Also, he spazzes about the lamest things!!! "Turn off your lights!" "Open the curtains" "Turn the hallway lamp on!" I mean, seriously, is there nothing better to do??AND my mom works too! She works more than my dad AND makes more money. I'm not trying to favor my mom over my dad but he's not trying very hard to be a good father. more

Resolved Question: I accidentally sucked up a sock in my central vacuum. How do I get the sock out of the wall?

I have had my hose cleaned out and the sock was not there so it has to be in the wall somewhere. There is no suction in my vacuum so I really need to do something about it. more

Resolved Question: How to (politely) tell cleaning lady not to use your vacuum?

Our cleaning lady is a family friend of my in-laws. She does a good job, but she's VERY hard on equipment. Anything I buy with a sponge or a brush is completely shot within two visits. (I'm talking about things I'd use for months or years before they needed to be replaced.) We just retrofitted a high-end central vac in our new house, and after she used our powerhead just ONCE, it looks worse than my parents' that's been used for over 20 years! (I had assumed she'd use the same vacuum she brought with her to our old place.) Because this is a family friend, I don't want to offend her (or my in-laws), but I must insist on keeping my expensive belongings in good condition. I'm thinking of just leaving a note saying that I appreciate her hard work, but that central vacs have unique issues (which they do) that I'd rather not worry about when I'm not there, and asking her if she could please use another vacuum or leave the vacuuming for me. PS - This lady has been cleaning for my husband & in-laws since before I met my husband. It's a situation in which they know she needs the money, but she's a proud person who insists on "earning her keep" as they say. (In other words, it's not as simple as replacing her or just doing without a cleaning lady, which would be fine with me.) Any tactful suggestions?Oh, I love the "suffering" remark. Like I said, I don't even need a cleaning lady, and despite what you might think because my family "employs" one, I'm not made of money to just throw around. I'm seeking heartfelt advice on how to keep my stuff in good shape without offending someone. I don't think that's unreasonable. If you wanna be sarcastic with somebody, please do it elsewhere. more

Resolved Question: These new energy saving light bulbs....?

Are a bad idea... Does anyone agree with me? Mercury? I mean really. Here are some instructions if one breaks... Before Clean-up: Air Out the Room * Have people and pets leave the room, and don't let anyone walk through the breakage area on their way out. * Open a window and leave the room for 15 minutes or more. * Shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system, if you have one. Clean-Up Steps for Hard Surfaces * Carefully scoop up glass pieces and powder using stiff paper or cardboard and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag. * Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder. * Wipe the area clean with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place towels in the glass jar or plastic bag. * Do not use a vacuum or broom to clean up the broken bulb on hard surfaces. What a hassle! And I've been exposed to mercury.. Now I'm gonna die instead of using more electricity... more

Resolved Question: Is anyone worried about the long-term environmental effects of compact fluorescent bulbs?

Considering that the EPA recommends these steps if you ever break a bulb, I wonder if we might end up causing more environmental problems than we are solving by switching to these bulbs: from http://www.energystar.gov/ia/partners/pr... How should I clean up a broken fluorescent bulb? Because CFLs contain a small amount of mercury, EPA recommends the following clean-up and disposal guidelines: 1. Before Clean-up: Air Out the Room Have people and pets leave the room, and don't let anyone walk through the breakage area on their way out. Open a window and leave the room for 15 minutes or more. Shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system, if you have one. 2. Clean-Up Steps for Hard Surfaces Carefully scoop up glass fragments and powder using stiff paper or cardboard and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag. Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass pieces and powder. Wipe the area clean with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place towels in the glass jar or plastic bag. Do not use a vacuum or broom to clean up the broken bulb on hard surfaces. 3. Clean-up Steps for Carpeting or Rug: Carefully pick up glass fragments and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag. Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder. If vacuuming is needed after all visible materials are removed, vacuum the area where the bulb was broken. Remove the vacuum bag (or empty and wipe the canister), and put the bag or vacuum debris in a sealed plastic bag. 4. Clean-up Steps for Clothing, Bedding, etc.: If clothing or bedding materials come in direct contact with broken glass or mercury-containing powder from inside the bulb that may stick to the fabric, the clothing or bedding should be thrown away. Do not wash such clothing or bedding because mercury fragments in the clothing may contaminate the machine and/or pollute sewage. You can, however, wash clothing or other materials that have been exposed to the mercury vapor from a broken CFL, such as the clothing you are wearing when you cleaned up the broken CFL, as long as that clothing has not come into direct contact with the materials from the broken bulb. If shoes come into direct contact with broken glass or mercury-containing powder from the bulb, wipe them off with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place the towels or wipes in a glass jar or plastic bag for disposal. 5. Immediately place all clean-up materials outdoors in a trash container or protected area for the next normal trash pickup. Wash your hands after disposing of the jars or plastic bags containing clean-up materials. Check with your local or state government about disposal requirements in your specific area. Some states do not allow such trash disposal. Instead, they require that broken and unbroken mercury-containing bulbs be taken to a local recycling center. 6. Future Cleaning of Carpeting or Rug: Air Out the Room During and After Vacuuming The next several times you vacuum, shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system and open a window before vacuuming. Keep the central heating/air conditioning system shut off and the window open for at least 15 minutes after vacuuming is completed. more

Resolved Question: central air conditioning not cooling?

I've got central air. The air temp coming out of the vent was only 7 degrees lower than the actual room temp. A tech put 1 lb of freon in it but that did nothing. I got another tech to come and he cleaned the coil and said that if that didn't work it might need to be "weighed back in" --- there might be air in the freon and it needs to be emptied, vacuum the air out, and then refilled. A year ago, the previous owners did have somebody put freon in so it's very possible that they got somebody who didn't know what they were doing. He was planning on doing this on Monday, if the coil cleaning didn't work. It's MUCH worse now since he cleaned the coil. The air temp has only a 3 degree difference now, and I think the outside unit sounds "different" than what it did before. I might be wrong though and just looking for things. Will I need a new unit? And, should I just shut this off? It's 88 degrees outside and 83 degrees in here. The heat index is 91. The unit has run nonstop for a week. Thanks! I just wanted to say that I know it's not a DIY job but, as a single woman, if I'm not slightly informed, techs will rip me off. For example, when the first one came, he put in freon and then tried to sell me a new unit. This site has helped me a lot, just to know what to ask for - like checking the temp at the vent. The filter is only a few wks old and I tried turning it off for 10 min and then turning it back on to reset when this first started and that didn't work. I do like the last tech that came out. He seems to be going in the right direction, but he did comment on how I knew as much as I did (and I don't that much). I told him I had electrician friends in another city LOL. Right now, the freon is full, the coils are clean, there's no ice anywhere, and the unit is 9 years old. The "restriction ... plugged up filter dryer" comment sounds familiar. Somebody told me to have him check for a "blocked screen" b4 he dumped the freon. I will def tell him that.oh, and I remember him saying the pressures were good (didn't really understand it, but he said it). more

Resolved Question: Vacuuming at a restaurant...?

I work as a waitress, and I work dayshift. It is part of our job to vacuum before we leave. We use a central vacuum. So it is quiet. Some people get ticked off when we vacuum. Why? It's quiet. Would they rather look at a dirty floor rather than a clean one? We try to do it when the lest amount of people are there. But sometimes, it is impossilble to vacuum without customers being there. So does it bother you? Would you rather see a dirty floor than a clean one? Maybe this is a heads-up for the ones that do complain! Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Is duct cleaning a worthy investment and, if so, how much $$$?

We bought a house in Aug. and my wife, w/ history of asthma, complains of an increase in congestion and allergies since moving in. She has mentioned that sometimes she'll feel fine all day, only for the symptoms to return when she comes home. The house was built in 1947, was converted to central air in 1985, w/ a combo A/C heat pump, is 1200sf and has 8 floor vents. The duct work is round, approx 1' wide, rigid ducting in a nearly-inaccessable crawl space. While we were in limbo waiting to close on the house, during a record rainfall year, the crawl space had some standing water which had entered the return line and was sloshing around. The duct was supposedly vacuumed and the leak repaired before we took posession and there has been no water entry since and the return appears relatively clean. Is cleaning worthwhile/legitimate? How much $$$ and what method(s) should we seek? Does having floor vents or past water leakage impact its necessity? more

Resolved Question: central vacuuming?

I possess an electrolux central vacuum system which has very weak suction power. I have checked the cannister (empty) and the filter (clean). Is there any other reason why this malfunctions or is there something else I can check or are central vacuums always weak? In comparison to a regular canister vacuum, this type is woefully lacking. more

Resolved Question: Why does my cat do this!!??

She is fixed\spay, we keep her box good and clean and the area vacuumed. The apartment is quiet and virtually stress free. She has a ton of toys and a cat hotel. The other cat and her have always gotten along very well. It's a small 500 square foot apartment with the box centrally located and she still pee's on the rug anywhere. I even put small dishes of food around where she likes to pee (could be any corner of the apartment), but she will pee a couple feet away from them anyway! People suggested we put a box in the other corners (which we did) and moved them slowly over weeks to the central box. Didnt do any good and we cant live with 10 boxes all around a 500 square foot apartment. We are going crazy and don't want to live with this anymore. It smells and it is unhealthy and we are fed up. I am giving this one last shot before we take her to the pound.Oh and we used a good quality enzymatic cat pee remover\oder remover also in all the areas. No good.Yes she was in the vet last week. Everything is good.I know it stinks to take her to the pound. But our home is getting destroyed and we can't live under these circumstances. We've always had cats and never had this problem before. If it keeps up we will have to replace the carpet, and it will just keep going. We just had new carpet in last year even :( more

Resolved Question: what kind of spider bit me?

i live in central nj and clean houses for a living. i was cleaning a small dark corner with a vacuum, the next thing - i have an itch on my face just above my lip. at first i thought it was a pimple. it looks just like a mosquito bite. the area around the bump -(about the size of the bottom of a coffee mug - no bite marks) became numb and tingly and lasted a good 3 hours. i took an aleve, a benadryl, put bactine on it, as well as ice for about twenty minites. it stayed a little swollen but didn't seem to bother me till the next morning (today). now the area is still slightly swollen and just a little itchy-tingly. i don't feel quite right (and didn't at 1st)-slight nausea (very slight) w/headache (my imagination?). it is starting to form a tiny scab almost like i scratched it, but i didn't scratch. Any one else have this same experience? i looked up spider bites, the bad spiders are not in nj, but i did see a black widow here once. will it get worse? what do i do now? thanks! more

I have posted a recent question about blocked underfloor liquid central heating pipes http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Akdu44SwTNUxcF8LNG7FxQYgBgx.?qid=20070104092939AApzQBW and although 3 people were contributing, - their answers have already been tried. I now was wondering whether anyone can suggest an easy way to create a suction (vacuum) system at the return ends of the underfloor pipes to the branch manifold whereby we let the 2 bar system pressure push the sediment through but also create a drawing at other end as I fear that pushing alone is going to consolidate and block the system which will inevitably (or most likely) 'blow' connections under the floor. Anyone remember the old milking parlour suction systems where I presume milk is drawn through the pipes and then drops into a visible cannister? Well, something like that is what I am trying to imagine / create where I can hopefully turn up the suction to match the pressure from the flow side.thanks to the contributors suggesting the wet vac idea. Brilliant and I never thought of that product but it is along the exact idea I have. I will try and have a go at that this weekend with optimism. Also thanks to the engineer who supported my findings / thoughts on the stainless steel insert 'red herring' put forward my my 'lifetime' plumber who obviously (when you've talked with him) knows the book - and that's even the bits he hasn't written. more
